Dr. Gretchen Ames, a Clinical Health Psychologist in Bariatric Medicine and Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, reviews her article appearing in the March 2020 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, which looked closely at the safety and efficacy of the underutilized treatment of bariatric surgery for patients with severe obesity. Dr. Ames notes one common barrier includes the misperception that resorting to surgical intervention indicates a failure on the patient’s part and that lifestyle changes and willpower alone should be enough to induce large, sustained reductions in body weight. She notes clinicians can provide valuable counseling to insure patients suffering with severe obesity have the opportunity to learn more about the most efficacious interventions.
